GCS Organization

In 2007, the Gauss Centre for Supercomputing e.V. was founded based on the initiative of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) together with the science ministries of Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia. Main purpose of this move was to assure that scientific supercomputing on a national level would be sustainable.

GCS combines Germany’s three major high-performance computing centres

HLRS, High-Performance Computing Center Stuttgart

JSC, Jülich Supercomputing Centre of the Jülich Research Centre GmbH

LRZ, Leibniz Computing Centre of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences in Garching near Munich

into one national Tier-0 supercomputing institution. GCS to date provides the highest-performing supercomputing infrastructure in Europe.
