LRZ Director Dieter Kranzlmüller Wins Honorary Award

The awards, given by the Bavarian Ministry for Digital Affairs, honor innovative projects, companies, institutions and organizations fostering increased technological progress in Bavaria.

The Bavarian Digital Award, B.DiGiTAL 2026, was presented on Thursday, April 23 at the 2026 Rocketeer Festival in Augsburg. The annual conference brings together experts from various fields to discuss digital innovations, future trends, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

During the event, the Bavarian Minister President presented the Honorary Award in the digitalization category to Prof. Dr. Dieter Kranzlmüller, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ) and Professor of Computer Science at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universtität München (LMU). Prof. Kranzlmüller is also currently Chairman of the Gauss Centre for Supercomputing (GCS) Board of Directors 

In his speech during the award ceremony, Bavaria’s Minister President, Markus Söder, highlighted Kranzlmüller’s achievements and role as a pioneer in advancing cutting-edge technologies in the state and played a major role in shaping the state’s digital future, establishing LRZ as a world-class high-performance computing (HPC) center. “Bavaria is the number one high-tech region in Germany: here, ‘digital first’ is our motto. We honor those who are shaping this future, and Prof. Dieter Kranzlmüller has given outstanding effort in the service of making Bavaria a hub for science and digital innovation,” he said.

In his comments after winning the award, Kranzlmüller emphasized the importance of the Bavarian state government’s ongoing support for science and cutting-edge technology.
