MUNICH, Germany, August 6, 2018—Prof. Dr. Arndt Bode, former Chairman of the Executive Board of the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ), has been awarded the Verdienstorden der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany). The honor is the highest national award for public service in the country.

At a ceremony in Munich on August 1, Bavarian State Minister for Science and Arts, Prof. Dr. med. Marion Kiechle, acting on behalf of German President Frank Walter Steinmeier, presented a medal bearing the Cross for Distinguished Service of the Federal Republic of Germany (first class) to Prof. Dr. Arndt Bode.
An internationally recognized expert in the field of programming for parallel and distributed computing systems, Dr. Bode served as Chairman of the Executive Board of LRZ from 2008 until 2017. LRZ is one of three national supercomputing facilities that comprise the Gauss Centre for Supercomputing (GCS).
At the award ceremony, Dr. Kiechle addressed Dr. Bode, saying, “Thanks to your research, Germany is a leader in the development of advanced computing architectures. Your outstanding scientific achievements have been internationally documented in more than 250 publications and as editor-in-chief of the journal Informatik Spektrum, the publishing platform of the Gesellschaft für Informatik (German Informatics Society), you are responsible for the successful presentation of important results of academic research in informatics for a large community of specialists. With your enormous personal activity as both a scientist and as a scientific manager you have provided exemplary service in science and research.”

Across his long and productive career, Prof. Bode was a founder of GCS and represents the Bavarian Academy for Sciences and Humanities (BAdW) within the organization—Bode was nominated into the academy in 2007, the same year that GCS was founded, and serves as its current vice president. In addition, Bode played a significant role in the formation and growth of European supercomputing, including the formation of the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE), and served as the GCS representative in the PRACE council for many years. Bode also served as LRZ Chairman and as Chairman of the Department of Informatics at the Technical University of Munich until 2017. Since January 2018 he has served as President of the Bavarian Research Foundation (Bayerische Forschungsstiftung). He is a recipient of the Konrad Zuse Medal and the Intel HPC Lifetime Achievement Award, among other awards.

The GCS board congratulates Prof. Bode and appreciates all the support he has given to leading-edge German supercomputing throughout his career.
