Congratulations to SCC Team Heidelbears
GCS Newsflash 10/2021 –

For the fourth consecutive year, students from Heidelberg University demonstrated their international clout in the field of high-performance computing (HPC) by successfully participating in the Student Cluster Competition (SCC), integrated in the annual International High Performance Computing (ISC21) conference. Team Heidelbears, which had qualified for this year’s 12-team contest, served as only German representative in the international competition. The team delivered a strong showing and came out of the competition securing a solid 7th place.

The annually held SCC is a friendly yet spirited contest in which students have to showcase their HPC knowledge by running and successfully completing HPC performance benchmarks and by mastering a series of real-work workloads used by scientists and researchers. The challenges included applications addressing education and applied learning towards accelerating bioscience research. Additionally, the students are quizzed by contest judges who test the young talents’ overall knowledge of the field of HPC. Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the contest—just like the ISC2021 conference itself—was again held in digital format, with the teams remotely accessing the high-performance computing systems made available by the National Supercomputing Center (NSCC) Singapore and the University of Toronto in the course of the competition.

GCS management would like to sincerely thank all members of team Heidelbears for their enthusiasm and determination for showcasing their HPC expertise in this challenge. Special thanks are also due to the two team coaches, Aksel Alpay and Alexander Haller of the University Computing Center (URZ) Heidelberg, Service Unit Future IT - Research & Education (FIRE), for their continued efforts to keep the team going despite the pandemic-related difficulties in getting prepared for this extraordinary challenge.

Team Diabolo from Tsinghua University in China ultimately won the competition.

GCS supported team Heidelbears by providing financial assistance in preparation of the virtual cluster event. The donation was used to help equip the students with the necessary technical devices and to finance cloud sessions in preparation of the event.
