Delta wings, or wings with a triangular planform, are an important reference configuration for applied high-performance aerodynamics as well as for basic fluid mechanics studies. They represent tailless aircrafts, so called flying wings, or high-speed high-agility aircrafts with low aspect-ratio wings. Delta wings with smaller dimensions are frequently used for passive flow control (so called vortex generators). The flow around delta wings involves much more complex fluid-flow phenomena than the flow around conventional wings with high aspect ratio. This additional complexity mostly results from strong interactions between lift dependent leading-edge vortices. Detailed turbulence resolving numerical simulations, such as those conducted in this project, are therefore indispensable.
